Start with the essentials

Decide the intended use before choosing the design. Roof debris and other contamination can enter collected water. Drinking-water use needs appropriate treatment and testing; simple collection does not make water potable.

What you can do

  1. Check local requirements and obtain the property owner’s permission.
  2. Use covered storage, screens and a safe overflow arrangement.
  3. Arrange regular cleaning and mosquito control without unsafe tank entry.

Keep in mind

Groundwater recharge and structural work need site-specific professional design. Do not connect untreated water to drinking-water pipes.
