Start with the essentials

Find the oil specification for your exact model and year. Many motorcycles share oil between engine, gearbox and wet clutch, so an unsuitable automotive oil may cause problems. Hot weather alone is not a reason to ignore the prescribed grade.

What you can do

  1. Match the viscosity and required API or JASO standards listed in the manual.
  2. Buy from a reliable seller and inspect the seal and invoice.
  3. Record the change date and odometer reading; follow the specified interval.

Keep in mind

Synthetic oil does not automatically permit longer service intervals. Ask the manufacturer or authorised service centre when a specification is unclear.
