Start with the essentials
An engine can be damaged by low oil, overheating or other faults. Warning signs need diagnosis, not a guess about one failed part. Use the inspection method and service intervals in the manual for your exact motorcycle.
What you can do
- Check the oil level using the manufacturer’s procedure; investigate repeated oil loss with a mechanic.
- Keep scheduled oil and filter changes in a simple service log.
- Stop safely if there is an oil-pressure warning, severe knocking, smoke or a sudden loss of power.
Keep in mind
Do not continue riding an engine that appears to be failing. Switching to a thicker oil or repeatedly restarting it can make diagnosis harder and damage worse.
