Start with the essentials

Plan an alternative route when roads flood. An apparently shallow crossing can become deeper without warning. Waterproof clothing and working lights help with visibility, but they do not make a flooded road safe.

What you can do

  1. Check tyres, brakes and lights before setting off in heavy rain.
  2. Slow down, increase following distance and avoid sudden braking or steering.
  3. If the engine stops in deep water, do not keep restarting it; arrange safe recovery and inspection.

Keep in mind

Do not ride through moving floodwater. After significant water exposure, have braking, electrical and engine systems checked before normal use.
