Start with the essentials
Dengue spreads through infected mosquitoes, including mosquitoes active during the day. Remove standing water from containers and use suitable bite protection. Safe water and food handling address other risks; they do not prevent every infection.
What you can do
- Empty and clean water-holding containers regularly; cover stored water.
- Use appropriate repellents, clothing and screens according to product instructions.
- Seek medical assessment for fever; get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding or marked weakness.
Keep in mind
If dengue is suspected, ask a clinician about safe fever treatment. WHO advises avoiding aspirin and ibuprofen because they can increase bleeding risk.
