Start with the essentials

Read your card statement for the total due, minimum due, payment date and applicable finance charges. Interest and grace-period rules depend on the issuer and your payment history. A credit score is one input in lending decisions, not a guarantee of approval.

What you can do

  1. Pay the full statement amount on time when possible.
  2. Review your credit report through an authorised channel and dispute errors.
  3. If repayment is difficult, ask the issuer about available options before the due date.

Keep in mind

Do not borrow simply to improve a score. Compare the actual cost of any proposed repayment arrangement.
